Magnetic field in galaxies, galaxy clusters, and intergalactic space

چکیده
1550-7998=20 Magnetic fields of unknown origin appear to permeate the Universe on all large scales. We suggest that the winds and cosmic rays, which are produced by the spherical ejecta and jets from supernova explosions, magnetize the interstellar medium in galaxies, the intracluster medium in galaxy clusters, and the intergalactic space. We show that, if the cosmic rays generate magnetic fields in rough energy equipartition with the cosmic rays, the predicted magnetic-field strengths coincide with the ones observed.

Extragalactic magnetic fields
Recent advances in observational techniques reveal the widespread existence of magnetic fields in the Universe, and produce much firmer estimates of magnetic field strengths in interstellar and intergalactic space. Ordered, microgauss-level fields are common in spiral galaxy disks and halos, and appear to be a common property of the intra-cluster medium of clusters of galaces, indeed well beyon...
متن کاملMagnetic Fields in Galaxies
Most of the visible matter in the Universe is ionized, so that cosmic magnetic fields are quite easy to generate and due to the lack of magnetic monopoles hard to destroy. Magnetic fields have been measured in or around practically all celestial objects, either by in-situ measurements of spacecrafts or by the electromagnetic radiation of embedded cosmic rays, gas or dust. The Earth, the Sun, so...
متن کاملA Point Source Excess in Abell 1185: Intergalactic Globular Clusters?
Deep imaging with WFPC2 and the Hubble Space Telescope has been used to search for a population of intergalactic globular clusters (GCs) belonging to Abell 1185, a richness class I cluster at cz = 9800 km s. The field is noteworthy in that contains no bright galaxies and yet is centered on the peak of the cluster’s X-ray surface brightness distribution. We detect a total of 99 point sources in ...
متن کاملPulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملMagnetic Visions: Mapping Cosmic Magnetism with Lofar and Ska
The origin of magnetic fields in the Universe is an open problem in astrophysics and fundamental physics. “Cosmic Magnetism” has been accepted as Key Science Project both for the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR, under construction) and the planned Square Kilometre Array (SKA). At low frequencies LOFAR and SKA will allow to map the structure of weak magnetic fields in the outer regions and halos of g...
